Step by Step Guide to create Secure, Portable and Affordable Network System (SPANS) Gateway where you can Create your own TOR router: Stay Anonymous while you accessing Dark Net - Inside the Digital Underworld

The Secure, Portable and Affordable Network System (SPANS) Gateway project is intended to address comprehensive internet access while ensuring privacy and secure use of digital media. The project artefact allows users to browse and use the internet anonymously. Additionally, SPANS artefact is designed to facilitate network monitoring, performance assessment, and analysis thus intended to be an essential tool for business network administrators.

SPANS is built using The Onion Router (TOR) technology (copyright and license-free) on a Raspberry Pi computer while scripts and services, used in this project, are open-source applications, modified in accordance with SPANS design requirements. Open-source applications are not bound by any copyrights, warranties, and license agreements.

Nowadays, it’s challenging to secure computer networks or devices against cyber attacks and malware intrusion. SPANS artefact provides a very secure internet access point since it uses an advanced encryption method for queries over the internet. The system also creates an encrypted tunnel between the user and the requested server, sheltering the user’s privacy and keeping the user’s origin anonymous thus eliminating the internet “footprint”.

Device portability is confined to places that offer a port connection to the internet (jack) and the user must use an Ethernet cable. These connections are generally more secure and can be found in establishments such as libraries, universities, and some conferences venues.

The features that make SPANS stand out from other similar systems are:

•The capability of connecting multiple computers from which users can access the internet, anonymously and securely.

•The embedded tools for network analysis and monitoring

Here are the major weaknesses and issues that the internet global network presents:

•Personal information is provided on multiple sites (banking, online shopping, etc.), and its security can be compromised or leaked.

•Individual hackers and organized cybercrime groups are actively exploiting internet vulnerabilities through IoT devices and hijacked computers

•Safety issues such as cyberbullying, cyber harassment, cyberstalking

• Privacy policy issues, such as signing up for an online service and accepting its privacy policy which could state that user data will be collected

Country restrictions exposing internet users to privacy and security risks, when people start using unsecure VPNs to bypass internet blockage

• Website restrictions like Geo-blocking to prevent shoppers in some countries from buying cheaper products and services overseas

The above issues and vulnerabilities are the main reasons for designing SPANS artifact.
